After leaving Coffs Harbour we followed the Pacific Highway south and detoured into Urunga for a bit of a wander around town and to buy some meat from the Butcher. He sells some of the best meat I have had on the trip. After Urunga I followed the coastal route as much as possible and detoured into Nambucca Heads. I hadn’t been here for so many years as the highway bypassed this bottleneck in one of the earlier realignments of the Sydney to Brisbane Highway.
We stopped at Kempsey for lunch and shopping and then called into The Slim Dusty Centre so Claire could have a look as I had been through it 2 years back on my way south. Next was a two night stop at Dunbogan Caravan Park. This was a great spot, nice and quiet. We walked into the town of Laureton and caught the local bus back.
From here it was a short drive through the lakes to an overnight stop at the Bulahdela Golf Club. This is a donation camp which was very popular, as was the Chinese Restaurant within the Golf Club.
Leaving Bulahdela we drove through Cardiff and Charlestown before heading to Horseshoe Bay in the heart of Newcastle at the foot of the lighthouse. Here a mate and his partner who live in Newcastle joined us in the carpark in their motor home. The following night we went back to their place to camp outside their home in Hamilton South.
